THE cockpit voice recorder of an Indonesian passenger jet that crashed into the sea in January with 62 people on board was found overnight, an official said on Wednesday.
The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) was discovered under one meter of mud at the bottom of the Java Sea, said Mr. Soerjanto Tjahjono, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee.
“We found the CVR last night. It will take about three days to one week to decipher the data,’’ Soerjanto said.
Soerjanto said it would be extremely difficult to determine the cause of the crash without the cockpit voice recorder.
The other black box the flight data recorder was found days after the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 crashed minutes after take-off from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport on Jan. 9.
All 62 people on board died.
In a preliminary report on the crash, Indonesian investigators said that the aircraft had problems with its automatic throttle system.
The jet’s left engine throttle lever trimmed back, resulting in less engine power, while the right one jammed just before the aircraft crashed, the National Transportation Safety Committee said.
