A Federal High Court, sitting in Benin, on Wednesday, ordered that a 41-tear-old businessman, Nnabueze Chibuike, be remanded in a correction centre for allegedly importing unwholesome and unregistered processed foods.
Justice S.M. Shuaibu made the order at the request of NAFDAC’s Counsel, Mrs Chinyere Okoli, who urged the court to remand the defendant, to enable her respond to the defence counsel’s bail application.
Shuaibu, who asked Okoli to ensure she responded to the issues raised in the bail application, adjourned the case until Dec.6.
Earlier, Okoli told the court that the defendant, who resides at No 20, Arondizugu Str, Vegge, Onitsha, Anambra, was alleged to have stored in his factory situated at 22, Nepkenkpen St., Benin, unwholesome processed foods to wit: ”Mivina Chicken” seasoning.
She added that the defendant also allegedly imported the product from Contonu, Benin Republic.
The NAFDAC counsel, said the the alleged offence contravened the provisions of Section 1(a) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and unwholesome processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, Cap, C34, LFN 2004 and punishable under section 3 of the same Act.
She added that the offence also contravened the provisions Section 1(1) of the Food Drugs and Related products ( Registered, E.TC.) Act, Cap F33,LFN, 2004 and punishable under Section 6 of the same Act.
The defendant pleaded not guilty of the charge. (NAN)
