A Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, on Friday ordered the remand of one Umeren Lewis in police custody, who allegedly defrauded a woman of N1. 2million.

The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, who gave the order, said the police should carry out further investigation and adjourned the case until July 11.

Lewis of Jabi Daki Biyu, Abuja, was arraigned on a three-count charge of joint act, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

Lewis pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ifeoma Ukagha, told the court that one Fawoye Helen, of Wuse 2, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station Abuja on June 28.

The prosecutor said the complainant alleged that the defendant and three others now at large claimed to be house agents, when she was looking for an apartment to rent.

Helen said that they look her to Wuye, where she saw a house, like it and paid N1.2million on June 27, into Lewis account.

Ukagha said that she later discovered that the defendant was not an agent or landlord as claimed.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 79, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code
