The Badagry Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Ifeanyi David, to 18 months’ imprisonment for the theft of a mobile phone valued N25,000.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, in his ruling sentenced the convict to the jail term after he had pleaded guilty to the charge.
Adekomaiya gave no option of fine to David.
David, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Uko Ikem, during proceedings told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan.17, at about 5p.m., at No. 50, Sobiomo St., Iyana Itire Bus Stop, Shibiri area of Lagos State.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant went inside a Bet 9ja shop in the above-named address and unplugged a Gionee Android phone belonging to the complainant, Mr Joel Ojirinmaka.
The prosecutor said that earlier, Ojirinmaka had gone to a bet 9ja shop close to plug his Gionee Android phone to an electric power source to boost its battery.
“After about 10 minutes, he fell asleep. Then the defendant was alleged to have entered the shop and unplugged the phone, stole it and disappeared.
“Luckily, there was a CCTV monitor installed inside the shop that recorded the scenes.
“When its footage was later replayed, it captured and showed when and how the defendant stole the phone.
“The defendant was later captured with the help of some of the boys in the area and taken to Ilemba Hausa Police Station for prosecution.
“The complainant formally reported the case and wrote a statement to the police.
“The defendant also made a confessional statement, stating how he perfected the act without knowing that there was a CCTV camera in place in the shop,” he said.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened Section 287 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)
