Coronavirus Pandemic

GOV. Bala Mohammad of Bauchi State on Thursday said the state government would intensify surveillance and contacts tracing as well as enforcement of total lockdown of all the borders in the state.

Mohammad said during the update on COVID-19 in the state that this was necessary in order to curtail the spread or community transmission of the virus in the state.

He said the partial lockdown was working in the state and would continue till the end of Ramadan.

“In recognition of the fact that the partial lockdown is working, and that we have curtailed the transmission through the index infection of the COVID-19, we are continuing with the partial lockdown up to the end of Ramadan.

“We will also intensify surveillance, contacts tracing and the enforcement of no entry through our borders.

“Because we realised that all the current cases emanated from those areas where this disease has become pandemic, especially Lagos, Abuja and Kano.

“With this, we have gotten the buy-in of all the stakeholders, especially our security agencies and traditional rulers that the total lockdown of our borders would be enforced so that we will be able to curtail the community transmission of the virus,” Mohammad said.

The governor further explained that the state government would, in the next one week, provide support by supplying the masses with face masks, after which it would make it mandatory for everybody in the state to wear it.

“In the next one week after we have provided some minimum support for the wearing of masks, we will make it mandatory for everybody conducting his or her business to wear masks.

“We will definitely ensure the issue of social distancing is enforced in our places of worship, in our markets and everywhere in the state,” he said.

The governor also said the stakeholders had resolved to intensify prayers, sensitisation and conduct themselves by example where all the Imams, the clergymen and all leaders in the state would wear face masks.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bauchi state has recorded 83 confirmed cases of COVID-19, six have been discharged so far and has recorded 77 active cases with zero death. (NAN)
