DELTA Government on Saturday called on community and religious leaders as well as other stakeholders to be champions of peace in fostering global peace and harmony.

Chief Edwin Uzor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, made the call in Asaba at a news conference marking the 2024 International Day of Peace celebration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the 2024 celebration is “Actions for Peace: Our Commitment to Global Goals”.

Uzor emphasised the need for stakeholders’ collaborative efforts to nurture peace in our society.

“This year marks a significant milestone in the execution of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The 2024 observance of the International Day of Peace synchronised with the SDG summit aimed at fostering more peaceful, just and inclusive societies devoid of fear and violence.

“The SDG can only succeed with the engagement and contributions of a vast array of stakeholders,” he said.

Uzor noted that the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has shown commitment to enhancing peace and security through people-oriented policies and programmes.

He, however, noted the peace effort of the government was almost called to question with the crisis between Okoloba Community in Bomadi and Okwuoma Community in Ughelli South Local Government.

According to him, the feud between Okoloba and Okwuoma resulted in the ambush and killing of some personnel of the Nigerian Army.

“Gov. Oborevwori rose to the occasion and ensured that relative peace was restored to both communities,” he said

Uzor noted that most of the people affected in the incident were still in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, advising the people to always imbibe the virtue of peace.

He hinted efforts were being made to rehabilitate the people affected by the crisis and restore damaged facilities.

“The state government has started rebuilding schools and hospitals in the affected areas and we believe very soon the people will all go back to their communities,” he said.

Uzo also disclosed that the state government was working to demarcate the boundary between the two communities to ensure lasting peace.

“This is in line with the governor’s resolve to engender peace, which is in consonance with the objectives of the United Nations General Assembly in the annual observance of the International Day of Peace,” he said. (NAN)
