A don, Prof. David Ogunniyi, has urged the government to explore various sources of electricity generation like gas, hydropower, and biogas to ensure a stable power supply in the country.

According to him, constant power generation is achievable from waste, if the government is desirous of making it work.

Ogunniyi, who is the Dean of, Faculty of Engineering and Technology at, the University of Ilorin, stated this while delivering a lecture at the inauguration of the 21st Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ilorin branch on Friday.

“Electricity generation needs to be explored, using different sources like gas, hydropower, and biogas.

“When waste is burnt, it releases heat. The heat released can be used to convert water to steam, which can, in turn, can be used to drive turbines.

“That’s how energy can be gained from waste and then used to generate electricity.

“It is not a simple task that individuals can do; it must be in an organized version.

“For example, Kwara can organize her waste and use it to generate electricity. At least, it will serve a segment of the population.

“We always generate waste and once it is available, there is a constant supply of raw material; the rest is just the political will,” he said.

In her inaugural speech, the NSE Chairman, Ilorin Branch, Dr Temitope Odetoye, called on the government to provide enabling environment for engineering to thrive, in the overall interest of the country.

Odetoye, the immediate past Head of, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Ilorin, noted that the role of engineers and engineering in national development could not be over-emphasized.

According to her, engineering has played a very important role in the making of the developed world.

“It is no doubt that engineers are to be adequately engaged to transform Nigeria to a foremost economy of the 21st century.

The NSE chairman said that epileptic power supply in the country would be a thing of the past if the government could be ready to source electricity generation through other means.  (NAN)
