A Professor of History, Prof. Umar Diram, has urged politicians in the country to indulge in acts that will promote national unity and development

Diram, a Lecturer, Department of History, University of Maiduguri made the call in Gembu on Tuesday at the maiden National Congress of the Government Secondary School Gembu Old Students Association (GOSSGOSA).

He said it was important for politicians to play the game in a manner that would promote religious and ethnic tolerance.

”The political class should avoid issues that are capable of dividing the country. We are stronger and better together,” he said.

The lecturer said it was regrettable that some politicians used religion and ethnicity to cause divisions among Nigerians.

Diram commended the people of Gembu for their peaceful disposition and commitment to promote sustainable development.

He urged the association to undertake projects that would promote learning and good moral standards in the school.

In his speech, Justice Ibrahim Buba, an old student who was given an award of excellence, urged Nigerians to be patriotic.

Buba, a judge of the Federal High Court, said the award would spur him to do more in support of the school.

”We all have to play critical roles to uplift the name of the institution that built and made us who we are today.

”As old students, let us endeavour to support one another, let the more privileged among us reach out to those who have not been very privileged,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the association from within and outside Nigeria attended the meeting. (NAN)
