Ebitu Ukiwe, retired naval officer and businessman, 75, October 26. Born in Abiriba, Abia State, he was educated at Church of Scotland Mission, Abiriba, 1946-1952; Duke Town School, Calabar,1953; Enuda High School, Abiriba, 1954-1958; Adventist High School, Ihie, 1960; Nigeria Military Training College, Kaduna, 1960-1961; Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmonth, England, 1961-1964, and US Naval War College, USA, 1980-1981. He was enlisted in the Nigerian Navy and was commissioned sub-lieutenant, 1963; promoted lieutenant, 1965; became flag officer, Western Naval Command, NN, 1984-1985, and appointed chief of general staff, 1985-1986. He retired from the Nigerian Navy, 1986. Ukiwe was a member of the National Democratic Coalition that was opposed to the regime of the late Sani Abacha, former Nigerian military head of state.
