ON the sidelines of his participation in the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, participated in the 3rd Policy Session on inter-regional knowledge exchange focused on early warning and conflict prevention.

The theme of the session was “Joint Mobilisation for Regional and Continental Governance and Security Initiatives.”

In his address to the session, which was chaired by Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and attended by delegations from the RECs and Member States, Omar Alieu Touray stated: “ECOWAS spends about 53 million dollars a year on its peace and stabilisation missions in Member States.

“Although this is a significant investment, it is insufficient to meet the growing security challenges in the region. For instance, in 2023, ECOWAS provided humanitarian assistance to more than 10 million people affected by conflicts and natural disasters, underlining the pressing need to mobilise adequate resources to support vulnerable populations, in addition to maintaining peace and ensuring stability…

“The path to sustainable peace and development in our regions lies in our ability to mobilise resources jointly and effectively.”
