THE tension in the land is on the increase as the February general elections approaches. And politicians are solely responsible for that due to the inflammatory speeches they and their supporters have been making about what they will do should the outcome of the election not favour them. This is expected.
But the unexpected happened on February 5, when the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, SNPA, pointedly accused Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s chairman, of actually planning to rig the election in favour of one of the candidates. This has never happened in the history of Nigeria even though politicians usually will alleged they were rigged out of the election after elections have been held. In this instance, the electoral umpire is the accused and the accusation is coming barely one week to the presidential election scheduled for February 14.
Since that time many Nigerians are asking whether it is possible that the chairman of INEC, a revered university don with unassailable character could be colluding with some interest group to rig the election? What has changed since 2011 when he conducted and election which is adjudged to the free, fair and credible? How will the revelation by the SNPA affect the conduct and outcome of the election especially after the group passed a vote of no confidence on Jega with the damning evidence of his collusion with the Northern Elders’ forum to rig the election? Will he resign or hang on and carry his mission to the end? The answer to the question is contained in the Realnews cover story for this week entitled: Exposed! Jega’s Blueprint to Rig Election. It was written by Maureen Chigbo, editor. Enjoy it.
