FREDERICK Fasehun is a man of strong conviction who will give his life to defend any cause he believes in. A medical doctor by profession, who was born in 1938, Fasehun owns a hotel and has been the leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, a Yoruba-based organisation which was formed to actualise the annulled mandate of late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a Yoruba, who won the presidential election of June 12, 1993 but was barred from office.
He has suffered in the defense of his beliefs. For instance, Fasehun was imprisoned for 19 months from December 1996 to June 1998 during the military rule of General Sani Abacha. He regained his freedom 18 days after Abacha’s death. His activism, belief in democratic ethos and his outspokenness ruffled former President Olusegun Obasanjo who detained him and later charged him for treason in 2006. He was released without being convicted.
Fasehun still holds strong views about the happenings in the current political environment in the country and his political party, Unity Party of Nigeria is supporting the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party. Realnews sought him out for an interview to know why he is supporting the party which has been in power for 16 years instead of campaigning for a change of guard at Aso Rock. The thought provoking interview entitled: “Why Buhari Will Fail Again” was done by Olu Ojewale, our general editor. Enjoy it.
