THE Nigerian government has been urged to adopt sustainable practices in the development of its Blue Economy to ensure ocean health is not compromised.
This call was made by Dr. Awwal Bamanga, an expert in Blue Economy, during a public lecture held in Lagos to commemorate the 2024 World Ocean Day.
The event, organized by the International Ocean Institute – Nigeria (IOI-Nigeria) in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), emphasized the theme “Blue Economy: Balancing Economic Growth and Ocean Health.”
Bamanga commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, highlighting its potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s economic fortunes.
However, he stressed that this potential could only be realized through the efficient management and sustainable exploitation of ocean resources, necessitating collaboration among various government agencies.
He explained that the Blue Economy encompasses various sectors, and a comprehensive policy document delineating the roles of each sector would be essential for promoting sustainable practices.
Bamanga pointed out that the global Blue Economy could contribute $1.5 trillion to the economy if managed sustainably.
He emphasized the importance of sustainability in protecting the ocean from over-exploitation and pollution, thereby ensuring its long-term socioeconomic and environmental benefits.
Bamanga also noted the crucial role marine ecosystems play in maintaining ocean stability, waste assimilation, and supporting coastal communities’ quality of life.
He warned of the pressures faced by coastal and marine resources due to overfishing, coastal overdevelopment, and pollution, highlighting that 80% of marine pollution originates from land-based activities.
Promoting environmental governance, establishing marine protected areas, ensuring sustainable fishing practices, reducing pollution, mitigating climate change, and restoring habitats were some strategies Bamanga recommended for advancing the Blue Economy.
He also underscored the need for research, awareness, education, and international cooperation in addressing ocean health challenges.
Akanbi Williams, Director of IOI-Nigeria, emphasized the global nature of ocean health issues and the necessity for international cooperation to protect and restore oceans.
He highlighted the importance of ocean literacy, noting that better understanding leads to more informed decisions.
Williams advocated for promoting ocean literacy programmes, leveraging media and social platforms to disseminate information, and encouraging youth participation in ocean conservation efforts.
Williams also praised the Lagos State government for its initiatives against plastic pollution, acknowledging the state’s efforts in recycling and other measures.
He reiterated the IOI-Nigeria Center’s commitment to promoting ocean health through public awareness and education on marine pollution, overfishing, and deep ocean mining.
Prof. Abiodun Sule, represented by Dr. Obatola Ochuko, highlighted the collaborative efforts between NIOMR and IOI-Nigeria in advancing ocean research and promoting sustainable practices.
He expressed confidence that these partnerships would continue to yield positive outcomes for ocean conservation and sustainable economic growth through the Blue Economy.
The event also included a presentation of awards to students from Lagos schools who won an essay and crafts competition, aimed at deepening their knowledge about the ocean and its conservation.
The occasion brought together scholars, conservationists, and other stakeholders, including officials from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and NIMASA, reinforcing the collective commitment to safeguarding ocean health while pursuing economic growth.
