Financials sector drives NGX trading, index up

INVESTORS on the stock market of the Nigerian Exchange Ltd. (NGX) traded a total turnover of 2.001 billion shares worth N49.486 billion in 70,853 deals during the week.

The NGX weekly report, made available in Lagos, said this is in contrast to a total of 2.414 billion shares valued at N55.512 billion that exchanged hands last week in 80,988 deals.

The Financial Services sector led the activity chart with 1.199 billion shares valued at N26.325 billion traded in 30,527 deals.

This contributed 59.91 per cent and 53.20 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

The Agriculture Industry followed with 234.002 million shares worth N1.683 billion in 3,191 deals.

The Consumer Goods Industry placed third with a turnover of 173.829 million shares worth N7.150 billion in 8,903 deals.

Trading in the top three equities, namely Access Holdings Plc, Ellah Lakes Plc, and Fidelity Bank Plc, accounted for 618.543 million shares worth N11.207 billion in 7,159 deals.

They contributed 30.92 per cent and 22.65 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

Investors gained N196 billion as the Market Capitalisation appreciated by 0.29 per cent to close the week at N67.614 trillion, compared to N67.418 trillion.

Also, the NGX All-Share Index rose by 0.41 per cent to close the week at 108,497.40 points from 108,053.93 points recorded on Feb. 14.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of NGX CG, NGX Premium, NGX Banking, NGX Pension, NGX AFR Bank Value, NGX AFR Div Yield, NGX MERI Growth, NGX MERI Value, NGX Oil and Gas, NGX Growth, and NGX Commodity.

They all depreciated by 2.09 per cent, 1.15 per cent, 3.22 per cent, 1.22 per cent, 3.25 per cent, 1.79 per cent, 2.39 per cent, 2.78 per cent, 2.87 per cent, 0.25 per cent, and 0.50 per cent, respectively.

However, 28 equities appreciated in price during the week, lower than 65 equities in the previous week.

Similarly, 58 equities depreciated in price, higher than 31 in the previous week, while 64 equities remained unchanged, higher than 54 recorded in the previous week.
