A former Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery (NACA), Retired Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor, has urged the Corps to intensify research so as to enhance the fire power of their

Obiakor said this on Tuesday in Kachia, Kaduna State, at a lecture organised as part of the 2023 Excercise Vulcan Glow IX.

The theme of the lecture was ‘Transforming NACA for effective fire support in asymptomatic warfare through sustained R&D and local repair efforts in joint operations environment’.

Obiakor, who was the guest of honor, said research was key to the artillery corps’ air power projection as the military tackle insecurity in the country.

He therefore said that the Corps must continue it’s aggressive research trajectory to achieve its mandate, especially now that the nation is faced with myriads of security challenges.

Describing the NACA as one of the major corps of the Nigerian Army, Obiakor said without them, other services especially the Army, would not be able to keep up to its mandate.

He therefore urged leadership of the corps to ensure robust research endeavors in order to move the corps and the Nigerian Armed Forces to greater heights.

Earlier, NACA Commander, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, said Exercise Vulcan Glow is an annual field training exercise of the corps.

He explained that it was designed for personnel to engage in practice formations on the employment of artillery resources in all phases of conventional and unconventional warfare, as well as non military operations.

The commander added that it was also to enhance troops proficiency in the use of artillery resources in asymmetric warfare.

Kangye also explained that the lecture was newly introduced as part of activities lined up for the conduct of Excercise Vulcan Glow IX.

He said that the participants would interact, share experiences and set conditions necessary for the successful conduct of the exercise.

The Corps Commander, therefore, said the exercise was important in enhancing the operational efficiency of the Artillery corps and enhancing its fire for efficient conduct of military operations in the country.

He noted that the 2023 excercise was unique with the introduction of the study period, where seasoned artillery officer share their experiences and chat way forward in improving the corps’ capabilities.
