GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz is due to officially open Germany’s biggest annual motor show, IAA Mobility, in Munich on Tuesday.

The German automotive industry hoped Scholz would take a clear position on the industries heavily discussed cost structures, which would aid them to compete better in the global market.

For example are possible subsidies for particularly energy-intensive branches.

They expected statements on securing jobs in Germany, on China and on the expiry of purchase premiums for e-cars, which were also eagerly awaited.

In addition to Scholz, the president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) Hildegard Müller, and Bavarian Premier Markus Söder.

They were also due to speak during the opening ceremony, followed by a tour of the premises and trade halls.

The police were especially on their guard due to possible protests by climate activists.

Photographers were hoping to get a good shot of Chancellor Scholz and his eye patch during his visit.

The chancellor fell while jogging over the weekend and was injured.

His attendance had not yet been cancelled.

The networking of various modes of transport was expected to be a topic at a forum during which Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr and Deutsche Bahn chief executive Richard Lutz plan to speak to Müller.

Hollywood actress, Natalie Portman is also expected to speak out on climate change. dpa/NAN)
