The Hunter Group of Nigeria (HGN) on Tuesday appealed to the Federal Government to strengthen security around the country’s borders as a way of tackling insecurity in the country.

The Lagos State Commandant of the group, Mr Balogun Oguniyi, made the plea in Lagos in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Oguniyi said that the country’s borders are porous , and therefore can easily allow any groups of people with malicious intent access to whichever part of the country if they so desired.

“We have been recording increased cases of kidnappings by bandits as well as activities stemming from herdsmen.

“I believe that with improved security around our borders, the activities of criminals infiltrating our communities will be greatly reduced,” he said.

The commandant said that the HGN as a security outfit had, over the years, been delivering adequate and quick responses to security threats within the communities.

“We have assisted in the protection of lives and property through intelligence gathering and prevented crimes through improved security and joint patrols with the police,” he said.

Oguniyi said that the Bill which would legalise the activities of the group and enable hunters to provide community policing and maintain law and order among the citizens had passed its second reading at the Senate.

“We pledge to increase crime prevention awareness campaign, develop neighbourhood crime prevention programmes and assist the Police in identifying and finding solutions that will prevent crimes in our society once we are officially legalised,” he said.(NAN)
