PROF. Adigun Agbaje, who recently regained freedom from the clutches of the abductors, said he was shot at in the head during the abduction process.
Agbaje stated this in a personal note of appreciation he released on Sunday night and made available to newsmen on Monday morning through Adewale Agbaje, his son.
While recounting his horror experience in the den of his abductors, Agbaje, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan noted that he narrowly escaped death the two nights he spent in the custody of kidnappers in the thick forests of Ogun and Oyo states.
“It is a new day and I’m happy to be alive. I was released by my kidnappers yesterday evening after spending two nights in the thick forests of Ogun and Oyo states.
“I was shot at in the head during the abduction process. I thank God that the bullet that went through my car’s windscreen left only a skin deep wound on my head even though it left a gaping hole in the cap I was wearing. I did not even know about this till Saturday morning when I saw caked blood on my cap,” he recounted.
He expressed his sympathy for the five other abductees, including two female students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta who were still in the hands of the abductors.
He noted that he was undergoing comprehensive health checks, thus it may take some time to thank all who came through for him.
Meanwhile, he recognized, especially the efforts of his in-laws, friends and in-laws to his children, colleagues at the University of Ibadan and other Universities at home and abroad, former and current Vice Chancellors of the University of Ibadan, Prof Olufemi Bamiro, Prof Isaac Adewole, Prof Idowu Olayinka and Prof Kayode Adebowale and all Nigerians.
“I am quite grateful for all your efforts,” he said. “You all kept hope alive and ensured that the sensitive negotiations came to a successful end when I regained freedom yesterday evening,” he said.
Prof. Adigun Agbaje is chair of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Institute for Governance at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, and former DVC (Academics) of the University of Ibadan.
He was kidnapped on Friday night along with five others by gunmen in military uniform around Dominican University, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
