INTERNATIONAL Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health, on Wednesday, commenced three-day training for 30 doctors and nurses on Trauma Management.

Mr Eleojo Akpa, the Communications Officer of ICRC, made this known in a statement in Abuja.

Akpa stated that the doctors and nurses, who were from Kano State Hospital Management Board, would be trained on trauma management and how to manage traumatised patients at emergency departments of hospitals.

She said the collaboration was aimed at improving participants’ ability to correctly assess and manage trauma cases resulting from injuries to the spine, the head or limbs.

Eloi Fillion, ICRC Head of Delegation, stressed the importance of quick and responsive care in every medical emergency.

Fillion said “quick and responsive care in medical emergency is crucial, as every second counts in a patient’s life.

“Good trauma care involves getting the patient to the right place at the right time for the right care which is crucial in saving lives.

He said the two specialist surgeons who would be conducting the training were Dr Iqbal Khurshid from India and Dr Kenneth Ozoilo from Jos.

“They would give theoretical presentations to the participants alongside intensive practical sessions on life saving techniques for traumatised patients,’’ he said.

According to Fillion, the ICRC worked in Nigeria on various challenging humanitarian capacities for 30 years.

He added that ICRC significantly scaled up its operations in response to consequences of armed conflicts in the North East and armed violence in central and southern parts of the country in the past nine years.

He noted that in 2017, more than 230 Nigerian doctors and nurses improved their knowledge and skills through emergency trauma and surgical management courses organised by ICRC. (NAN)
