THE Jigawa state government has ordered its local governments to improve the welfare packages for Corps members posted to the state to boost their morale.

Gov. Umar Namadi made the order during the 2023 Corps Employers Workshop, held at the National Youths Service Corps secretariat, in Dutse, on Tuesday.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Youths and Sports, Mr Sagir Musa, the governor explained that the administration had supported the NYSC scheme in many ways.

“We have, therefore, ordered the Local governments who are the hosts of these Corps members, to increase their welfare in view of the economic hardship in the country.

“We also wish to address the issue of rejection and under utilisation of Corps members by employers and that is why we support the Corps employers workshop,” he said.

Also, the Emir of Dutse, His Highness Hamim Muhammad-Sanusi, stressed the importance of the National Youths Service to the development and peaceful coexistence of the nation.

Sanusi, who spoke through the District Head of Kiyawa local council, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu, described the scheme as a “life-line scheme”, which has come to stay.

“The service has gained ground in the last 50 years moving forward, so this should tell us that it has come to stay.

“It is an obligation for all employers and other stakeholders to support the scheme in every way possible,” the Emir said.

In a presentation, Dr Mahmud Abba of the Geography Department, Bayero University, Kano, highlighted the tasks expected of employers of NYSC Corps members.

According to him, “Employers are expected to be Supervisors, supporters and educators of the Corps members working under them, for an effective service delivery.”

Coordinator of the NYSC in Jigawa, Mrs Aisha Adamu, said in her welcome address, that the workshop was aimed at promoting healthy environment for Corps Members in places of assignments.

She explained that the 2023 theme of the workshop is “Evolving strategies for promoting a healthy work life balance for Corps Members – The role of an employer”.

“The scheme is being confronted with the ever increasing challenges of rejection, under utilisation of corps members, inadequate welfare provisions such as accommodation and transport allowances.

The Coordinator reminded Corps Employers of their responsibilities in making adequate budgetary provisions for the welfare of Corps Members, to enable them discharge their responsibilities.

She warned Corps members against engaging in truancy, absenteeism and evasion from service, stressing that the NYSC vehemently frowns at such cases.

Mrs Adamu commended Gov. Umar Namadi for tirelessly supporting the scheme’s operations in the state. (NAN)
