THE Human Rights Activist and Social Crusader, Vincent Ezekwueme, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu as one of the dogged apostles of June 12 struggles to complete the healing process by immortalizing the doyen of June 12 annulment struggles and widow of the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election Late Kudirat Abiola.
In a statement, Ezekwueme named Late Pa Alfred Rewane, Late Pius Ezeife and Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who conducted the most transparent, credible, and freest, fairest and generally acceptable election by both national and the international community among those to be honoured.
It recalled that Late MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party was massively voted for by majority of Nigerian electorates in spite of Muslim-Muslim ticket in the election which was annulled by Babangida’s administration.
He noted that MKO Abiola, Kudirat, Rewane and others paid the supreme sacrifices for the democracy we are enjoying today. Whereas Late former Governor Pius Ezeife insisted his firm stand for the actualization of Abiola’s mandate.
He preferred to relinquish his position as governor than to abandon the June 12 struggle, while Professor Nwosu was patriotic, selfless, just and upright by conducting the freest and fairest election.
“Worthy of note is for Nigeria and Nigerians to imbibe the lesson and principles of June 12 through patriotism, selflessness, integrity, socioeconomic justice and love for common good and interest.
“Pertinently, the political class should ensure implementations of Abiola’s campaign slogan “Hope 93 Farewell to Poverty” as greatest and best tribute to his memory.
“Let all tiers of government bring hope to Nigerians through provisions of much needed but elusive democratic dividends and wipe out poverty by creating employments, skill acquisitions, accessible and affordable education and tackle insecurity. Our electoral umpire should emulate transparent elections conducted by Professor Humphrey Nwosu to restore people’s confidence and trust in the electoral system.
“I commends former President Buhari for immortalizing Late MKO Abiola with GCFR and making 12 Democracy Day, 25 years after the struggle by democrats, patriots, moralists and all lovers of social justice,” he said.
Ezekwueme, who is the Chairman Civil Liberties Organization Anambra State calls on Nigerians to exhibit in words and actions the spirit, letters and principles of June 12 characterized with oneness, love, patriotism, selflessness, unity in diversity and justice devoid of ethnicity, religiosity, statism or clans cleavages.
He also paid tributes to Late Gani Fawehemi,.Beko Ransome Kuti, Yinka Odumakin, Balarabe Musa, Col Abukakar Umar, Arthur Nwankwo, Joe Odumakin for their relentless sacrifices towards the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.
