ADESOJI Taiwo, Tournament Director of the ongoing Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) 2021 National Championship, says the federation will nurture for the national teams players discovered at the tournament.
Taiwo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that some of the players at the tournament were exceptionally good.
”The junior players are putting in their best to ensure that they graduate to the senior teams with their performance.
“Today’s (Tuesday’s) matches have been explosive as expected, and they are a replica of what happened at the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin in April.
“We can’t say for now that some players are better than the others, because we have a lot of good players on ground.
“Most especially in the cadet and junior categories, they have been showing a lot of promises and this is what is expected in this competition.
“A lot of junior players are getting prepared for graduation to the senior category,” he said
The tournament director also noted that some states were now taking over from the traditionally-known table tennis states, saying the future of the sport in Nigeria was bright.
“The good players that we are looking out for have not been disappointing. They are still doing very well.
“Today we have had the cadet and team events, and we saw the young ones, such as the Ikorodu boys who have played exceptional well today. They are very young and very promising.
“We could see a little lady from Cross River, and she is a JSS3 student. She gave her opponent from Oyo state a tough time. She is one of those we are looking out for now.
“Also, there are two young boys from Ikorodu, they are promising too,” he said.
Taiwo also noted that most of the players participating in the championship were dedicated and of good discipline.
NAN reports that the NTTF 2021 National Championship which began on Tuesday will end on Saturday.
The tournament is holding at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
