KADUNA Peace Commission has appealed to the people of the State and other major stakeholders to join hands with it in piloting the restoration of good inter community relations and adherence to the rule of law in the resolution of all forms of disputes.
While briefing press in Kaduna on the occasion marking the Commission’s two years of existence, the Chairman of the Commission, Bishop Idowu Fearon
said peace can only be sustained if the teaming population of youths work for peace.
“All temptations to act violently must be resisted, while complaints and grievances should be reported to appropriate authorities for peaceful
resolution including community and religious leaders, pressure groups, leaders of political parties, professional associations and leadership of various socio-cultural groups”.
He expressed satisfaction with the relative calm and social order that had
prevailed in most parts of the State, especially those local councils like Kaura, Zangon Kataf and Sanga where violent conflicts were recurring, saying, confrontations that occurred in Kajuru and parts of Igabi LGAs have also substantially reduced.
The Chairman said the prevailing insecurity in Birnin Gwari and parts of Chikun, Giwa, Igabi, Kachia and KagaLGAsare being addressed by the government and security agencies.
“The commission therefore appealed to security agencies to double efforts and join hands with the people to bring an end to criminal activities, including armed robberies, raiding of villages, kidnapping, rustling of cattle, substance abuse and other forms of crimes”.
He explained that the Commission is continuing with its engagements by facilitating the peace processes in Kajuru, Kaura, Lere, Jama’a, Igabi, and Giwa Local Councils.
“The interventions by the Kaduna State Police Command, LGA administrations and community institutions are also being supported by the Commission in over ten LGAs to address the challenges of insecurity”, he stressed.
Fearon assured that the doors of the Peace Commission and Local Government Peace Committees are wide open to the public.
The Commission also looks forward to more support from Ford Foundation, UNDP, DFID, USIP and center for dialogue.
Speaking on the Commission’s activities, he said they were assigned the task of working with government and people of Kaduna state to create a culture of durable peace and social tranquillity especially in areas facing challenges of violent conflicts.
“Two years into its existence, the commission has engaged and collaborated with diverse stakeholders within and outside the State in pursuance of its mandate.”
He further informed that the Commission included traditional and religious leaders, religious institutions,
national and international civil society organisations, bilateral and multilateral
organisations, leaders of political parties as well as the media to achieve the desired goals.
According to the Bishop, they had also partnered with young people, women groups and community based organisations, MDAs, similar agencies at sister States.
“At the international level, we participated and contributed to deliberations, providing technical insights for formulation of policies and designing of interventions that contribute to global peace and stability”.
He mentioned further that, the people of Kaduna state, including the various communities believed in the Commission, hence, their active
response to appeals for peaceful and harmonious coexistence.
Bishop Fearon attributed the success achieved by the Commission in the past two years to the tremendous support and cooperation by the collective teamwork and commitment of people and the various institutions that remained committed to a vision of a peaceful Kaduna State.
He applauded the media for its excellent contributions by publicising peace messages and restraining itself from engaging in divisive propaganda. (NAN)
