Kwara Gov’s wife urges collaboration, support in fighting illicit drugs
news
THE wife of Kwara governor and Founder, Ajike People Support Centre, Amb. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, has called for more collaboration among stakeholders in combating trade and consumption of illicit drugs in the country.
She specifically urged relevant individuals, religious groups and non-governmental organisations to join hands in fighting the menace of illicit drugs in the society.
Mrs Abdulrazaq made the call while receiving report from the state Drug Control Committee led by its Chairperson, Mrs Barakat Olanrewaju, in Ilorin on Saturday.
The governor’s wife enjoined the Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development to intensify efforts in checking and controlling illegal trade of drugs and its abuse especially in market places and among women and girls.
According to her, in 2018 Kwara was reported as the state with the highest rate in prevalence of drug abuse in the North Central, saying that the narrative has changed as the percentage had reduced.
She commended the committee for making the state proud while tasking them to do more to make the state drug free.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the committee disclosed that they had conducted sensitisation programmes and mobilised resources for drug control activities to about 40 schools and the Correctional Service in the state, noting that the rate of drug abuse among students is alarming.
She said that the committee was working closely with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and had also compiled all activities in response to drugs awareness and sensitisation in the state to report them to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. (NAN)
