Kwara Govt gets malaria commodities

THE Kwara Government has received anti-Malaria commodities worth over N344 million through the National Malaria Elimination Programme.

According to a statement by the state Ministry of Health on Sunday, this is in recognition of the various healthcare interventions under Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration.

Receiving the commodities, Dr Raji Razaq, the state Commissioner for Health, said “this is another manifestation of impactful governance and that our counterpart funds are still yielding sweet fruits”.

He noted that Global Fund and the National Malaria Elimination Programme are moves by the governor’s tireless investment in delivering preventive healthcare services to the people.

“This booster, through the National Malaria Elimination Programme in conjunction with Global Fund is aimed at positioning the State Based Malaria Elimination Programme to reach all eligible children in the Chemoprevention exercise along with 19 other states of the federation,” he said.

Razaq reassured residents that many more strategies shall be rolled out to ensure optimal healthcare services “especially in our new status as a sub-recipient for malaria grant”.

He said additional arrangements to involve more stakeholders was already at top gear, which will also ensure that the drugs reach the target groups in the communities.

He listed the commodities to include potent malaria preventive drug combination, refered to as Sulphadoxine/Pyrimethamine and Amodiaquine (SPAQ).

The commissioner explained that these are meant for oral administration to prevent Malaria in the targeted 600,000 children who fall between the age of three months to five years in 11 local government areas of the state.

Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu, the National Technical Director of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, stated that the selected local government areas for the exercise was based on the rainfall pattern as documented by the Nigeria Meteorological Services.

He also reassured the other five LGAs that another anti-malaria strategy is being developed to encompass them in another phase. (NAN)
