NO fewer than 300 residents of Akesan Community in Alimosho LGA of Lagos State on Thursday benefitted from free medical services offered by the Lagos State University (LASU).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that LASU organised the event through its Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA).
The event was the third edition of the LASUDA Community Give Back Project, tagged: “Happy Hour Outreach’’.
The maiden edition held at the Ojo Campus of LASU, while the second edition took place at Epe Campus of the institution.
The Director of LASUDA, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, said
that the medical outreach was an initiative of the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun.
“The initiative is our corporate social responsibility to our staff, students and members of the larger society.
“The first edition was at the university’s main campus, Ojo, and we had more than 500 people who benefitted from the medical outreach.
“The second edition took place at Epe Campus; we also had so many people from the community in attendance.
“This is third edition; we intended to take care of at least 300 people but the turnout is more than that,” she said.
Olatunji-Bello said that the medical services included screening for cervical cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
She said the medical practitioners involved are volunteers from the LASU College of Medicine, who would also provide free drugs.
“Where applicable, they will refer the patient to a doctor for further examinations and treatment,” she said.
Olatunji-Bello said that LASUDA chose Akesan Community because of its proximity to the university.
The professor said that subsequent editions of the outreach would be in other communities.
“Akesan hosts a large number of our staff and students; it is also quite close and accessible to our team,” she said.
A centenarian, who benefited from the project, Mr Musiliu Disu, lauded the gesture.
Disu told NAN that he had his eyes and teeth examined, with some defects detected.
He said that he also went for a blood sugar test and was directed to see a doctor for further treatment.
“This kind of programme is very good; it brings development.
“I am happy they chose our community for this, and I thank the Lagos State University for this initiative,” he told NAN.
The Alakesan of Akesan Land, Oba Tajudeen Fagbohun, thanked his subjects for coming out enmasse for the programme.
Fagbohun said that it showed that they were taking issues relating to their health serious.
