CYPRIAN Afunugo, a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, Awka zone, says environmental cleanliness is key toward checking spread of Lassa fever in the state.
Afunugo, who spoke to newsmen in Awka, following recent deaths of two resident doctors in Ebonyi State, urged people to ensure keeping their environment clean to avoid exposing food such as garri to rats.
According to him, rats have been identified as some of the agents of transmission of the virus.
The medical expert advocated regular hand-washing and protection in the treatment of all patients, who manifest symptoms of the disease.
Cliff Okafor, public health physician, urged people, who present symptoms of the disease such as fever, to report to General Hospitals nearest to them for examination.
He announced that the Anambra State Ministry of Health had spread their dragnets toward ensuring that all relevant health agencies were sensitised to take proactive steps toward maintaining zero tolerance to the viral disease.
