GOV. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau on Thursday declared his commitment to deepen the implementation of progressive reforms in the state’s justice system.
Mutfwang made the declaration while speaking at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr Gyang Bere, in Jos, the governor said access to justice is critical in conflict resolution.
He acknowledged the crucial role of leadership and adequate funding for actualising justice reforms.
He added that the justice system plays a pivotal role in combating the pervasive corruption which has stalled both Plateau and Nigeria’s progress.
He restated his administration’s commitment to establish robust mechanisms that would expedite and streamline access to justice.
According to Mutfwang, his administration had taken decisive actions by enacting the Law Reform Commission Bill as its inaugural legislative act, aimed at facilitating equitable access to justice.
He stressed the need for legal professionals to be drivers in steering Nigeria’s affairs to shore up development as captured in the conference’s theme: “Getting it Right and Charting the Course for Nigeria’s Nation Building,”.
“As members of the bar, we must rise to this challenge and provide the purposeful leadership that our nation desperately needs at this pivotal juncture.
“Our country faces multifaceted crises, and we must take stock, introspect, and redefine our position within the global community.
“The world has long anticipated Nigeria’s rise to leadership, particularly within the African continent,” he said.
Speaking, President NBA , Mr Yakubu Maikyau, thanked Mutfwang for his presentation on the discourse of justice system reform at the conference.
Maikyau expressed confidence in Mutfwang’s capacity to present NBA’s critique of the justice system to the Nigerian Governors Forum and the National Economic Council.(NAN)
