A 22-year-old tailor, Toheeb Afolade, who was arrested while in possession of a first of its kind gas gun, said his friend, Sodiq, lured him into armed robbery.

Afolade disclosed this at the Lagos Police Command on Thursday in Ikeja, where he was paraded with other criminal suspects arrested across the state.

He said that his friend gave him the weapon to join him to rob in order to make money.

“I was in my shop when my friend called me and handed a weapon over to me persuading me to join him in his robbing mission, so I complied,” he said.

Afolade, a resident of Amukoko, who claimed it was his first time, said that they were intercepted on their way.

“We took bikes and on our way, police officers started trailing us, and eventually arrested me,” he said.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, while addressing newsmen, said that the suspect committed the offence at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday on Eko Bridge, Lagos.

He said that the weapon recovered from him was a unique and strange gun called ‘Spyder Victor’.

“It is a unique weapon, this is strange, the first of its kind gas gun.

“The gun uses cartridges, we recovered some of the cartridges, we will get to the root of it because this is a new introduction,” he said.

Owohunwa said the suspect was arrested based on the concern raised by Lagos residents about the activities of traffic robbers.

“We deployed our operatives to cover some of those flashpoints and fortunately, last night, one of those traffic robbers was apprehended.

“The most unique thing about this is not just the arrest, but the recovery of this strange weapon from them,” he said.

The police boss said that the suspect and one other were apprehended but the other suspect died in the process of evading arrest.

“There were two of the suspects, one of them was arrested, the other, in an attempt to evade the police onslaught, jumped down from the bridge and essentially jumped to his death,” Owohunwa said. (NAN)
