SAM Ocheho, President, Handball Federation of Nigeria, says the National Under 18/21 Handball Championship underway in Lagos will discover future talents to make Nigeria proud at international events.

Ocheho made the assertion at the opening of the tournament on Friday at Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.

He revealed that the Federation would do everything possible to ensure the players maximise their potentials in their quest to be superstars.

He added that the championship would also be an avenue of development for the athletes.

Ocheho, while addressing the teams, urged that the players and officials to be of good conduct and avoid anything that could bring the sport into disrepute.

He also advised the players to follow the rules of the game, imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and eliminate fear as they face different opponents.

In the opening games, host Lagos ruthlessly defeated Plateau 33-9 in the U-19 female category, while Bayelsa defeated fellow first timers Gboko 20-9.

In the male category for U-18, Kogi’s second half onslaught paid off as they drew 25-25 with FCT while Ondo defeated Osun 17-13.

In the U-21 female category, Suleja Shooters won MindScope Academy 33-31 despite being one man down while Kwara comfortably saw off with a 19-3 victory.

In the U-21 male category, MindScope Academy defeated Oyo 20-15 while Niger came top with a comfortable 31-17 victory.

The defending Champions, Kwara state U-21 girls ran over Osun in the first half by 19 to 3 goals. Osun could not continue with the second half due to injury crisis and this led to the cancellation of the second half.
