NEARLS unveils TETFUND project to boost energy generation

THE National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) has unveiled a project on low gas energy generation to promote sustainability.

The research institute made this known in a statement signed by the Principal Investigator of the Project, Dr Fadlullah Issa, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project is focused on integrating the ‘biodigester’ into conventional septic tank too generate energy that could be used at home.

The project titled: “Integration of Biodigester into Conventional Septic Tank for Sustainable Energy Generation and Households’ Economic Viability in Nigeria”, is funded by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

Issa said the research would enable more Nigerians to benefit from the low gas energy generation for household use right from their homes.

“The project is one of the numerous research efforts sponsored by TETFUND to discover cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative energy sources that Nigerians can adopt across different household structure,” Issa said.

Issa said one of the benefits of the project was to develop a sustainable prototype system of biodigester using human wastes from the septic tank without any booster to produce energy for household use.

He said the first phase of the project would take place in selected facilities in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and in communities across Kaduna State for a period of 18 months.

He said there would be periodic seminars in the course of the project on progress report as well as technical reports on some of the outcomes to be shared among the stakeholders.

Issa quoted the Executive Director of NAERLS, Prof. Emmanuel Ikani, in the statement as saying that the project was timely considering the high cost of energy in the country.

Ikani said the results from the research would propel the development of policy on building of biodigesters into our sewage system to utilise low energy from the human wastes from septic tanks. (NAN)
