SEN. Ita Enang has called on Nigerians, irrespective of age, to remain united and join hands to develop the country.
Enang, who made the call at the inauguration of a law Chambers in his honour by law students of the University of Calabar (Unical), said Nigeria’s greatness was dependent on every citizen.
Enang was also honoured with an award during the dinner to inaugurate the structure, named Sen Ita Enang Chambers of Justice.
He said the masses would be the greatest beneficiary of a better Nigeria.
The award was in recognition of Enang’s contribution to the development of the university and partulicularly the university’s faculty of law and to humanity in general.
The ex-senator, who represented Uyo North East in the 7th Assembly, attributed his success in life to the grooming he received at the law department of the university and as well as what Nigeria had given him.
Enang, who was the immediate past Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, urged the students and the youth in general to be more responsive and patriotic to any cause that would make Nigeria great.
He said they should be mindful of their action and inaction as they were the reflection of the society.
According to him, “I was not only just a law student here, I was a student activist and I know how this institution has helped sharpening my life and made me what I am today.
“What I owe this country is to continue to mentor the young ones and let them know that they stand to benefit much from the greatness of this country only if they remain united and fight for the common prosperity of the country.
“We must all stay united and work for the growth and development of this country.”
Meanwhile, the Unical Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, has called for support and encouragement for women to be entrusted with more leadership positions.
Oboli, who spoke at the inauguration ceremony of the Chambers, said the call became necessary in view of the success stories of women in leadership positions across the country.
Represented at the occasion by Prof. Michael Okom of the Faculty of Law, Obi said Nigerian women had developed enlightened capacity to hold their own and excel in various leadership positions.
“Unlike before, women can now be found in various sectors and professions that were said to be exclusively reserved for the men.
“The capacity women have developed has helped them manage various crisis in these positions. The women haven’t done badly at all with the various obstacles on their way,” she stated. (NAN)
