The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nasarawa State chapter, has advised drivers to obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving to save lives.
Alhaji Salihu Adamu, the state chairman of the union, gave this advice on Friday during an awareness campaign on the “Rights and Responsibilities of Drivers” organised by the union at the Mararaba Motor Park, Karu.
He said the union was carrying out the campaign to educate drivers on their rights and responsibilities as well as acquaint them with the constitutional provisions of the union in the interest of peace.
According to him, there is the need for commercial drivers to register for membership with the union in order to be recognised and to benefit from it if the need arises.
He urged them to “always obey traffic rules and regulations in their own interest to save lives”.
“Members of our union and motorists in general, should always observe traffic rules and regulations and avoid reckless driving, speeding and wrongful overtaking to avoid unnecessary accidents,” he warned.
The chairman called on the branch officials of the union across the state to avoid anything that would jeopardise the rights of their members and ensure fairness in the interest of peace.
The NURTW chairman called on the passengers to caution drivers while driving recklessly and overtaking in wrong places.
The chairman said the union was committed to sensitising its members on the imperative of traffic regulations to achieve safety on the nation’s roads.
He also said that drivers would continually be mentored on the need to support government’s policies on transportation to achieve quality delivery.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the drivers, who spoke during the campaign, lauded the union for the gesture and called for its sustenance. (NAN)
