The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University School of Nursing, Nkpor has marked the 29th Capping and Matriculation ceremony.

The ceremony is an official reception granted students who have passed their six months Preliminary Training Section, PTS, examination into the university’s school of nursing.

Basil Nwankwo, the chief medical director, CMD, the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, COOUTH, congratulated the students for making it through the PTS exams.

“You have proved yourselves worthy of continuing in the profession.

“I implore you to put in your best to be able to meet the demands of your academic work as the school maintains very high standards,’’ he said.

The CMD assured the students of his assistance whenever there was the need.

He pledged to do everything possible to ensure that the forthcoming accreditation of the institution by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria would be a success.

Perpetual Anene, principal of the school, said that capping ceremony was an age-long tradition in nursing profession.

“It presents the new nursing students with their caps before they begin their clinical training.’’

Anene said that the institution had a strong academic foundation which had made it easy for their graduates to compete with their international counterparts.

She enjoined the students to always imbibe the culture of self discipline and hard work as there was no short cut to success.

The principal, then, thanked Governor Willie Obiano for his immense contribution to the school which include the brand new Hillux Vehicle, well equipped auditorium and total renovation of the school compound.

Others include landscaping of the premises and newly equipped security outfit that he brought to the school to ensure safety of staff and students.

Anene also commended Akabuike, the commissioner for Health, and Basil Nwankwo, the CMD, urging them to ensure that the forthcoming accreditation exercise would be a success.

She, however, appealed to parents, guardians, friends and well wishers to support the institution in every possible way toward the upcoming accreditation.

Stephen Obi, a male student nurse, said they went through a lot of competition, tension and intelligence tests that brought 50 of them out of the 99 PTS students.

He expressed his sincere appreciation to God and to Anene, their principal, as well as all members of tutorial and non tutorial staff for their efforts toward their academic excellence.

Other dignitaries at the occasion are Dominica Akpati, the director of Nursing and Midwifery, Ministry of Health, who capped the students and Igwe Emeka Ilouno of Ifitedunu who was chairman of the occasion.
