THE Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has said that the appearance of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in court, Thursday, October 21, was argely due to “the diplomatic engagements” of the organisation under the leadership of Ambassador (Professor) George Obiozor.
A statement by Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, spokesperson of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, said that their diplomatic engagements “apparently yielded a positive result” as the Federal Government through the Department of State Security, DSS, “bowed to the overwhelming demands of Ndigbo” and produced Kanu in Court.
According to Ohanaeze, “this is one step forward in Ohanaeze’s determined moves towards ensuring that the Afara Ukwu Prince is set free in no distant time,” stressing that “the Monitoring Team of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide led by former governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Chief Nwosu, Ezeigbo 1 of Abuja, (and) Barr. Goddy Uwazurike were also in court to monitor proceedings and report back to the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”
Etitled “OHANAEZE WINS AS FG PRODUCES NNAMDI KANU IN COURT,” the statement s ×)aid further that the organisation is “unrelenting in our resolve to ensure that the FG toes the path of wisdom by conceding to the proposal for Dialogue and Alternative Dispute Resolution which will ensure the unconditional freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and all members of IPOB detained across Nigeria.
“While commending Nigerians from all walks of life for the extraordinary interest and solidarity they have demonstrated for the current Igbo travails,” the statement urged Igbo youths “to show restraints, prudence and maturity in their legitimate demands for equity, justice and fairness.
The statement also lamented: “We are elated that Kanu was produced in court today. However, we were stunned that deliberate efforts were made to stop the leader of Ohanaeze delegation to the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the former Governor of Anambra State and others from entering the court. Ezeife was a state governor about 30 years ago, a retired permanent secretary, distinguished scholar with a PhD from Havard and Okwadike Igbo Ukwu. By all standards, Ezeife deserves honour and respect from Nigeria. Ohanaeze Ndigbo expects an apology from the federal government for the poor treatment meted to Dr. Ezeife and other members of Ohanaeze delegation.
“It is also worrisome and ridiculous that journalists were barred from the court; worrisome because the world want transparency in the trial of Kanu. Granted that the courtroom may not contain all journalists but at least some leading media platforms should have been allowed access to the court. Ohanaeze reiterates that the trial of Nnamdi Kanu should conform with global best practices. Furthermore, it is in the best interest of the federal government that her image in the comity of nations is not always up for bad reasons.
