The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has pledged to ensure a safe motoring environment and free flow of traffic in Plateau as the end of the year approaches.

Mrs. Pat Emeordi, the Sector Commander in the state, made this known on Tuesday in Jos during the launch of the 2018 `Ember Months campaign tagged “Safe Driving, Safe Arrival”.

She noted that the ember months usually witnessed heavy vehicular movement of people and commodities as well as misconduct by drivers such as overloading, speeding, wrongful overtaking and route violations, among others.

Emeordi said that the command had put in place necessary measures to check all unwholesome practices in a bid to reduce reduce crashes on the highways and ensure free flow of traffic.

“To ensure a safe motoring environment particularly in Plateau, we are poised to remove, if not totally eradicate all encumbrances to safety and free flow of traffic this season.

“We shall increase motor park rallies, public enlightenment in worship places, early morning safety cry at motor parks, pre-trip inspection of vehicles at major parks and training of inhabitants of crash-prone communities on first aid.

“We shall provide rescue services and response, and timely removal of obstructions on all major roads and critical corridors in Plateau.

“We shall also ensure more visibility with the deployment of more personnel on the highways and within cities and towns in the state.”

The sector commander enjoined all drivers and motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations and put their vehicles in good condition before plying highways during the festivities.

On his part, Mr. Daniel Seyi, the Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO), Jos zone, warned drivers against drunk driving, adding that any driver or motorists caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Represented by the command’s Head of Operations, Mr Imoh Etuk, Seyi said checks on drivers would form a major part of the campaign.

The ZCO also advised drivers to go for regular eye checks, noting that poor vision had contributed significantly to road crashes recorded in recent times.

Malam Nazif Mohammed, the Plateau Commissioner for Transport, who launched the campaign, said that the state government was ready to support all safety agencies toward ensuring the protection of lives of properties.

Mohammed said that the state government had approved the setting up of four truck terminals in the state, to reduce arbitrary parking of trucks on the highways, which often cause accidents or gridlock. (NAN)
