THE Police Officers’ Wife Association of Nigeria (POWA) is to benefit from the European Union, United Nations Spotlight education initiative.
The President, Non-governmental Association for Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS), Mr Noah Emmanuel disclosed this when members of the organisation paid advocacy visit to the President, POWA, Hajara Baba-Alkali, in Abuja on Wednesday.
The programme tagged: ”Accelerated Second Chance Education” is funded by the EU and UN with focus on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
The programme, which is implemented in pilot states of Adamawa, Ebonyi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is to provide livelihood skills for out-of-school girls and young women facing intersecting marginalisation.
Emmanuel appealed to the association to inaugurate POWA-NOGALSS Joint Technical Committee on mass literacy, livelihood skills and empowerment programmes for police officers families in the 36 states and the FCT
“NOGALSS is engaged to implement the Non-Formal Education component of the project. We shall be working in collaboration with the State Agencies for Mass Education (SAMEs) and other relevant stakeholders in all the implementing states
“The NOGALSS National Executive Council has approved that Police Officers Families in the implementing States and FCT be a beneficiary of the Spotlight Project.
“As a major stakeholder in education, we have come to intimate you of this laudable project and to seek your support in the following areas:
” To support in the monitoring and evaluation of the centres to be allotted to POWA To support the visibility of the Second Chance Education as a means to ending violence against women and girls.
” This will bring about positive changes in the norm, attitude and behaviours where all women and girls live a life free from all forms of Gender Based Violence,” he said.
He commended POWA for its collective efforts and commitment at empowering women to achieve success in literacy.
Responding, Baba-Alkali, said non-formal education among women and girl-child remained the network for any nation to end violence against women and girl-child.
Baba-Alkali said this would be done through remodelling of attitudes and behaviours where all would live a life free from all Gender Based Violence (GBV).
” In POWA, we have adult and non-formal adult education programme targeting women and girls taken up by NOGALSS, with support from UN and EU respectively.
” The project is timely as educating the women and youths forms part of our three-points agenda aimed at uplifting the intellectual capacity of POWA women and youths as a way of alleviating illiteracy.
” Secondly, helping in ending the countless carnage of unrest bedeviling our dear nation as an uneducated mind can yield destruction.
” It further enhance maximum efficiency when it bring about economy prosperity,” she said.
She further reaffirmed the commitment of the government by allowing non- formal centres to be replicated in all literacy institutions.
” I have entrenched non-formal education in all POWA chapters across the country through skill acquisition centres.
” All is to ensure renovation and equipping of POWA schools nationwide as a way of complimenting government’s efforts both at the state and local government areas.
“I will ensure POWA women enrol in this programme as this is a sure way to improving their lives,’: she said. (NAN)
