QNET, a lifestyle and wellness e-commerce company has urged journalists to continue upholding the ethics of their profession by disseminating balanced reports and guarding against fake news.

Mr Biram Fall, Regional General Manager, QNET Sub-Saharan Africa, said this during a webinar it organised to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day.

He said that journalists must navigate through a sea of information to validate sources and provide accurate reporting.

Fall said that access to accurate information was essential as it empowered individuals to make informed decisions about various aspects of their lives.

According to him, when people are provided with reliable information, they are better equipped to assess situations, weigh options, and make choices that align with their goals and values.

” In today’s digital age, where misinformation and fake news abound, putting out factual stories becomes even more critical to combating misinformation and promoting public trust.

“At QNET, transparency is one of our core values, and we firmly believe in the public’s fundamental right to access accurate information.

“We recognise the pivotal role of the media in disseminating information and we acknowledge that press freedom is essential for ensuring that accurate information is freely available to the public.

“As advocates for press freedom, we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote transparency, openness, and accountability in the media landscape, ” he said.

Fall added that QNET would continue to support initiatives aimed at safeguarding press freedom by promoting ethical journalism and sponsoring forums for discussing these crucial issues.

Also, Chinenye Anuforo, a Speaker and Journalist with the Sun Newspaper, said press freedom was not merely about headlines or broadcasts, but the lifeblood of a healthy society.

According to her, press freedom is the vigilant eye that holds power to account, and the platform for exchanging ideas freely.

“It empowers us to challenge the status quo, debate critical issues, and ensure accountability from our leaders.

“In Nigeria, our press landscape is diverse and vibrant, reflecting a collaborative effort between various stakeholders,” Anuforo said.

On challenges faced by journalists, she said journalists often worked under tight deadlines, especially in breaking news situations, noting that this could lead to stress and compromises in thorough fact-checking or in-depth reporting.

Anuforo added that sometimes getting information from sources took a long process, leading to delays in breaking stories. (NAN)
