Registration of Members of Obasanjo-led Coalition for Nigeria Movement Begins

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has started registration of members for the proposed Coalition for Nigeria in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Kehinde Akinyemi, media aide to the former President had said that the registration would start at the Ogun State Secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Iwe-Iroyin, in the state capital.

Obasanjo had last week, through a special press statement, proposed a Coalition for Nigeria as the only alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Obasanjo, who supported the APC when it won the general elections in 2015, accused President Muhammadu Buhari, among other things, of nepotism, poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics and passing the buck.

According to the former President, nothing should stop such coalition from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for election.

He however promised to bow out at any stage the Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for election in order to maintain his non-partisan position.

He said, “We have only one choice left to take us out of Egypt to the promise land. And that is the coalition of the concerned and willing – ready for positive and drastic change, progress and involvement.

“We need a Coalition for Nigeria, CN. Such a movement at this juncture need not be a political party but one, which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong.

“That Movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress. Coalition to salvage and redeem our country. You can count me with such a Movement.

“Of course, nothing should stop such a Movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates from election. But if at any stage, Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for elections, I will bow out of the Movement because I will continue to maintain my non-partisan position.” – Independent
