Rep. Pat Asadu to pay WASCE, NECO fees for 1,000 students

PAT Asadu, the member representing  Nsukka/Igboeze-South Federal Constituency of Enugu State, in the House of Representatives, has promised to pay the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) fees for 1,000 students  drawn from his constituency.

In addition to the WASCE fees, the lawmaker is also to pay the National Examination Council (NECO) fees for the 1,000 students.

The lawmaker announced the payment of the fees on Thursday in Nsukka, at the commencement of quiz competition for 41 secondary schools in the area. 

Asadu, represented by Mr Chineme Onyeke former member representing Enugu North in Nigeria Youth Parliament, said the aim of the quiz competition, sponsored by the lawmaker was to encourage the students to study hard.

He explained that the lawmaker would pay the WASCE and NECO fees of the best 1,000 students that participated in the competition.

“The lawmaker knows the importance of education that is why he doesn’t joke with education.

“One thousand students that will emerge as winners will receive N20, 000 for WASCE fee and N20,000 for NECO fee.

“ They will also be given money for the purchase of recommended textbooks, while other students that participated will be given participation gifts ,” he said.

Mr Emeka Onyia, from Enugu State Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB) commended the lawmaker for the quiz competition and paying of examination fees for 1,000  students that would emerge victorious.

“I commend Asadu for his interest in education and urge him to keep it up.

“Wealthy people in the country should help government to fund education as government cannot do it alone.’’

Mr Ogbuja Ogbu, one of the coordinators of the Pat Asadu Quiz Competition, who spoke, said that winners, participating students and schools would be rewarded on June 23, the day fixed for the final.

Some of the students who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), commended the lawmaker for the gesture.

They spoke with a NAN correspondent at Iheaka Girls’ Secondary School in Igboeze-South LGA, one of the venues of he competition.(NAN)
