NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday said the staged assassination of the Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kiev may undermine the trust in the free media and be used for propaganda.

“We are all relieved that Babchenko is alive. I would like to underline that I regret that this incident may undermine trust in free press and be used to fuel propaganda,’’ Stoltenberg said at a news briefing.

On May 29, Babchenko, who moved to Ukraine in 2017, was reportedly shot dead near his apartment in Kiev.

However, the next day he showed up at a press conference of Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Hrytsak, who said that reports suggesting Babchenko was murdered were part of an operation to thwart an assassination attempt against him.

On Thursday, a Ukrainian court arrested Borys Herman, a suspected organiser of the alleged plot to murder Babchenko, for two months. (Sputnik/NAN)
