SEPP Blatter, Fifa president and Michel Platini, UEFA president, have lost the appeals against their 90-day ban for financial wrongdoing. The Fifa governing body’s appeal committee rejected their appeals on Wednesday, November 18.
The 90-bans prevent Blatter from working as Fifa president and stop Platini, UEFA president, from campaigning for the Fifa presidential election on slated for February 26.
Blatter, outgoing Fifa president and Platini were both provisionally suspended by FIFA’s ethics committee in October over a $2 million payment made to the Uefa president in 2011 for work said to have been carried out more than nine years previously.
Blatter was accused of making a “disloyal payment” to Platini. Both have denied any wrongdoing, though they acknowledged there was no written contract for the extra salary.
Platini on Wednesday, November 18, said he would take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, in Lausanne, Switzerland, where appellants could choose one of the three lawyers to judge their case, said French agency AFP. The CAS outcome would determine any remaining hopes for Platini’s bid to run for Fifa president.
Blatter could also choose to take his case to the CAS.
