THE Student Union Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State has reminded the students that indecent dressing is not allowed on campus.

In a letter signed by Sulaimon Adedamola, Speaker of the Student Union Government, students who fail to comply will face the consequences of a disciplinary action which may include suspension.

The letter, which was addressed to the students of the Polytechnic on Saturday, Aug. 12, also reminded them that wearing of pants and bras was not only for their own comfort and safety, but also out of respect for their fellow students.

“Please respect your fellow students and the rules of the school by wearing appropriate clothing at all times.

“This could include warnings and even suspension. The school takes this rule very seriously and any violation will be treated as a serious offense,” it said.

The warning to the students of the polytechnic is coming at the time when the rate of indecent dressing in tertiary institutions across the country is growing towards an alarming proportion.

Realnews recalls that there was a viral video recently alleging that ladies were being arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State for not wearing bra. The people responsible for the arrest claimed to be the Anambra State Task Force on Indecent Dressing.

Although Ify Obinabo, the commissioner for women and social welfare, had swiftly dissociated the state government from such acts and described those perpetrating the act as people, who wanted to tarnish the image of the state government. The Daily Champion news, which carried the story, reported that a lady was purportedly made to pay a N5000 fine for not wearing a bra to some self-acclaimed revenue collectors, before they let her go.

Also, the Ubeji Youth and Employment Development in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State had in July imposed 40 strokes of the cane as punishment for any girl found to have dressed indecently in the community.

According to the Daily Trust report on Saturday, the community, however, gave an option of N10,000 fine against any such offender.

Stanley Bomele, secretary of the body, who spoke to newsmen, said that the youths had embarked on an exercise tagged, “War Against Indecent Dressing,” among young ladies in the area.
