The Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Advocacy (LEAD) Network, has urged Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to consult widely with the people on choosing a successor in 2023.

It said the governor must  jettison insinuations and suggestions to take automatic and self-imposed decisions on choice of his successor and political positions come 2023.

The Executive Director of LEAD Network, an NGO, Mr Chukwuma Okenwa, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday.

Okenwa, however, urged Ugwuanyi to ensure he embraced wide consultations and internal democracy in choosing who would succeed him.

He described as regrettable, a statement credited to Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, (PDP-Enugu East), and former governor of Enugu State, that the governor reserved the right to decide who would succeed him.

“One wonders if such a statement is consistent with the core principle of democracy which confers the right of choice on the people and not to one man.

“Entrusting the right of choice on one man is tantamount to Monarchy and not democracy; thus, subjecting the common will of the people to the vulnerability of one man.

“Such kind of gesture will produce the kind of leadership that will be loyal to the Ebeano Dynasty and not to the good people of Enugu state,’’ he said.

The LEAD Network boss said that the Ebeano group should rather be sober, adding that its 21 years of leadership had not clearly distinguished Enugu state as the Old Eastern region Capital of both the South-East and the South-South.

Okenwa, who is a public affairs analyst, called on the people of Enugu state to be more proactive with a firm resolve to make the issue of governance people-driven.

“It should not and never be the prerogative of a few or one man,’’ he added.

It would be recalled that on Sept. 19, Sen. Nnamani, founder of the Ebeano political movement, led the group to a solidarity visit to Gov. Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu.

At the meeting the senator pledged absolute loyalty and support for Ugwuanyi’s political decisions in 2023. (NAN)
