Coronavirus Pandemic

WEARING a face mask on public transport in Switzerland became mandatory on Monday for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

Previously, authorities had recommended passengers cover their mouth and nose only during rush hour, though most people seemed to ignore the instruction.

“It is looking good, more than 95 percent of people are wearing a mask,’’ Guido Schoch, director of public transport in Zurich, to local media, said.

Schoch noted that the new rules also covered flights by Swiss airlines, adding people will also have to wear masks on cable cars, though not in shops.

According to the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the number of coronavirus infections in Switzerland has recently risen significantly by 134 percent.

Over the weekend, 410 students and teachers in two schools near the French border had to be quarantined because of new cases.

From Monday, travellers from 29 high-risk countries have to self-quarantine for 10 days upon entering Switzerland.

This includes people travelling from Russia, Serbia, Sweden and the U.S. (dpa/NAN)
