ANAMBRA State Commissioner for Education, Kate Omenugha has hailed the idea behind setting up of Dr Godfrey Ajoku Teachers Resource Centre.
Ajoku was one of the first Nigerians to serve as principal of a college in the New York area of U.S.
He was described as a man with unquenchable interest in education, which motivated him to contribute to the training of teachers.
Omenugha, who was represented at the occasion by the Zonal Education Officer Onitsha, Dan Ihediuche praised the management of Irene Menakaya Nursery and Primary School, Onitsha on which the centre was located for the remarkable steps in promoting quality education in the state.
The commissioner used the opportunity to highlight contributions of Anambra State Government in the training and retraining teachers.
She adds: “Anambra State Government has done well with regards to capacity-building through funding of Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Omenugha noted that government had also used seminars and workshops to enrich teachers, so as to be able to offer quality education to their pupils.
She hailed Ajoku, on who, the centre was named for coming all the way from the U.S., for the event.
At the occasion was also a trainee lecture on, who talked on “Quality Education, Key To Development’’.
The proprietor, Christy Chukwukelu, said the giant strides taken in building the centre said it aimed at raising the standard of the productive students, which was of great necessity.
Another top dignitary at the event and Dean of Studies Faculty of Environment Studies, Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Leonard Nonyelum Muoghalu said that Education gave birth to invention.
He noted that teachers should be harnessed to impart productive knowledge to children.
Muoghalu, however, complained that recruiting low grade teachers and a lack of resource centre had contributed to low performance of children, which had affected the entire society.
“Teachers need the resource centres like this, where they can always go for refresher courses on modern education initiative.’’
The proprietor , Chukwukelu explained the aim of opening the centre in her school was to lay good foundation from where they would step up in adding more to the training of teachers for better quality education.
She applauded her school for always being in the lime light of new invention in private schools.
Chukwukelu expressed gratitude to Dr Godfrey for coming all the way from U.S., to honour the invitation and also offering financial support to the centre.
The event featured the unveiling of Dr Ajoku Teachers Resource Centre.
Chukwukelu noted that throughout his 40-year stay in New York, he had always envisaged coming home to contribute to elevating teacher education in Nigeria.
“Teachers play multiple roles in training children; if you are not an effective teacher you can’t impart knowledge to your pupils
“Having this in mind they learn by visual (what they see) by auditory (listening) and by Artherstre (action, demonstrate)
Ajoku donated N500, 000 to the school and offered them many books for teachers’ training and development.
