VEHICLE drivers in Anambra State have been cautioned that defaulters of traffic rules and regulations could face prosecution after undergoing psychiatric tests.
The Anambra State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Andrew Kumapayi, said this while inaugurating the Association of Taxi Cab Operators in the state at the Prof. Kenneth Dike Digital Library, Awka.
Kumapayi said his office had since commenced plans in collaboration with the Anambra State Government to arrange tripartite traffic judges involving Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIO, who would place defaulters on psychiatric tests before prosecution.
The commander called on members of the association to obey traffic rules and regulations, observe COVID-19 protocols, install Speed Limiting Device and keep their vehicles in good order.
He mentioned Defensive Driving Technique as a way of avoiding reckless drivers, who beat traffic lights and overtake wrongly, thereby causing road accidents.
The commissioner for transport, Afam Mbanefo, said that Gov. Willie Obiano mandated him to ensure that the association would become the best taxi cab outfit in Nigeria.
The commissioner said that the state had developed solutions and applications for easy identification and safety of vehicles and occupants.
“Your partnership with the state will make you run a safe, reliable, and profitable business,’’ he said.
The VIO, state Command, Ralph Okoye, stressed the need for the association to bring their vehicles to his office after the inauguration for computerised inspection.
“The vehicles will pass through mechanical, alignment, shock absorber, and OBD sections to ensure functionality,’’ he said.
The Chairman, Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Nwabueze Nwokoye, pleaded with the commissioner to rejig the transportation sector so that youths and graduates would see it as a veritable avenue to eke out a living.
The chairman of the association, Chekwube Okoli, promised that the association would put to work all they have learnt in order to restore sanity to the transportation sector in the state.
