A 31-year-old man, Adebayo Sodimu, on Friday appeared in an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court, Isabo, for alleged dangerous driving and causing the death of one Mrs Jelilat Reheem.
Sodimu, of no fixed address, is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving, driving without licence, and causing the untimely death of a person.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Olaide Rawlings, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 27, at about 1:00 a.m., along Lafenwa Road, rail way crossing in Abeokuta.
Rawlings said the defendant, a truck driver of one Volvo Truck, with registration number OGUN AYE 571 XB, drove dangerously on the highway, which caused the untimely death of the deceased.
She said defendant drove recklessly and over sped, causing the truck to somersault.
She explained that the deceased was a trader who boarded the truck with her goods, alongside other traders who went to the market.
“The driver was on a high speed, which made the vehicle to summersault, and the deceased fell from the top of the truck while the goods also fell on her, which caused her death.
“He was also driving on the public highway without a driver’s licence,” the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 6, 13 and 10(3) of the Federal highway Act Cap F13, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs I.O Abudu, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
Abudu added that the surety must own a fully completed building within the court’s jurisdiction and must be resident in it; and also show evidence of one year tax payment to the government.
She then adjourned the case until Nov. 22, for commencement of trial. (NAN)
