THE Anambra State branch of the Women Arise For Change Initiative has commended the humanitarian and patriotic disposition of Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State governor, for risking her life by rushing to Regina Ceali Hospital Awka by 9pm to pay the bill for a six-year-old child, who had a fracture and injuries from the brutality of the father.

It will be recalled that little Chiagozie Nwobodo from Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government Area was brought to the hospital as emergency case, but doctors demanded a deposit of N300,000 before she could be taken to the theatre for surgery which her parents could not afford.

However, the governor’s wife intervened by paying the deposit of the N300,000 before she could be attended to and operated by the doctors.

“This in no small measure to save and secure the life of the helpless child,” the group said in a statement tagged “you will only be remembered by your good works” and endorsed by Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman and Chinyere Amah.

The group extolled the governor’s wife for believing and living out the assertion of St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta that “one has not lived unless he lives for others in addition to postulation of John Holmes that “the only good motive in life is motive of doing good for one’s country and her citizens”.

We equally appeal to political officials and public spirited individuals to emulates her selfless services and sacrifices.

We are humbled and overwhelmed by her humility and patriotism in solving the pathetic problem of the hapless child unsolicited.

“We appeal to doctors to adhere to the Hippocratic physicians’ oath to save life first,’’ the group said.

It called on the government and security personnel to apprehend, detain and prosecute the father of the child for child abuse and brutality to act as deterrent to others.

The group urged parents, guardians and Nigerians to always secure, safeguard, protect and defend the rights and social welfare of helpless children.
