PROF. Yushu Zhou, a teacher at School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University, China, says adequate investment in Science and Engineering (S&E) education, will accelerate youth development.

Yushu, a Co-founder of one of the largest news App in China, “Yidian Zixun”, gave the advice while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Beijing.

He spoke on the sidelines of a lecture titled: “Digital China; How mobile technology changes China”, organised under the auspices of the China Africa Press Centre (CAPC) Programme 2022.

According to him, S&E constitutes a primary productive force, not only for country development, but also for individual development.

Yushu said: “Young people should try to have a good education in S&E; In China, better education in S&E gives young people more job opportunities in society.

“Secondly, young people should be more interested in new technology, be entrepreneurial and ambitious.

“Many young people in China build up their own companies and develop new tech-products to solve problems, improve people’s life in the society, and pursue commercial success.

“Developing countries have huge potential and big markets, because young people are the driving force behind economic development.

“Our society and governments should encourage young people to create new products and build up companies.”

The teacher commended China-Africa cooperation describing it as mutual since the inception of diplomatic friendship between both countries.

He, however, said that in terms of China-Africa cooperation, China’s development showed a good example of digital economic growth that other developing countries could learn from.

“Digital economy relies on three forces; government’s investment in infrastructure, big market and free market system to encourage digital companies and startups, and a good education system in S&E.

“Africa has a big market size; If countries in Africa invest in infrastructure, they will receive huge returns and the Chinese government is willing to assist African countries to improve their infrastructure.

“Thanks to the big market, many Chinese companies and Chinese capital have invested in Africa too.

“They will not only bring digital products and services, but also bring Chinese business models to Africa, it also may help improve the local digital economy.

“In addition, e-commerce is powerful, China and African countries could have more trades, Chinese online shoppers love to have more products from Africa,” he added.

NAN reports that no fewer than 90 Journalists from 67 countries across Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, are participating in the programme, which began in June.

The programme, which is being hosted by the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA), is expected to end in November. (NAN)
